Disability Awareness Workshop (DAW)

I had so many kids show me this invention to help people button their shirts.  They had an entire table devoted to inventions to help people do things.

Playing Tic Tac Toe without being able to see is tricky!

What a wonderful experience for our fourth graders!  Kids are in three groups and spend the morning go to a wide variety of stations learning about disabilities.  People from The Center for Independent Living are on hand to run centers and talk with kids about disabilities .  Here are some things they do during their day:
Use goggles to show different vision issues
While wearing oven mitts, try unlatching and latching devices
Use a wheelchair to navigate through an obstacle course
While their hands are restricted, toss a ball to a friend
Use walkers and other devices to help them walk
Meet a service dog named Lola
Evaluate the school to see how easily one could get around and use equipment with a disability
  Play games using a blindfold
  Investigate Braille
AND SO MUCH MORE!

Please talk with your kids about what they experienced and what they learned.  Ask questions.  They were amazing throughout the entire program and I was so proud of them!

Thanks to Carla for all of her hard work helping to put this together for our kids!  BRAVO!
