Disability Awareness
Workshop (DAW)
I had so many kids show me this invention to help people button their shirts. They had an entire table devoted to inventions to help people do things. |
Playing Tic Tac Toe without being able to see is tricky! |
What a wonderful experience
for our fourth graders! Kids are in
three groups and spend the morning go to a wide variety of stations learning
about disabilities. People from The
Center for Independent Living are on hand to run centers and talk with kids
about disabilities . Here are some
things they do during their day:
• Use goggles to show different vision issues
• While wearing oven mitts, try unlatching and
latching devices
• Use a wheelchair to navigate through an
obstacle course
• While their hands are restricted, toss a ball
to a friend
• Use walkers and other devices to help them
walk
• Meet a service dog named Lola
• Evaluate the school to see how easily one
could get around and use equipment with a disability
• Play games using a blindfold
• Investigate Braille
AND SO MUCH MORE!
Please talk with
your kids about what they experienced and what they learned. Ask questions. They were amazing throughout the entire
program and I was so proud of them!
Thanks to Carla for
all of her hard work helping to put this together for our kids! BRAVO!
