Math – Unit 2
We
started Unit 2 in math this week with both grades. Kids spent some time looking through their
journals to see what they’d be learning about before we dove into our
lesson. 4th graders are
looking forward to learning about:
length, width, square numbers, factors, prime numbers, composite
numbers, quadrilaterals, time, area of rectangles, factor pairs, line symmetry,
arrays, and multiplication problems. We
will spend time learning how to solve multiplication problems using the PARTIAL
PRODUCTS strategy. Information will come
home so you are able to help your child learn this strategy. It’s not what you learned as a kid, but it’s
a really great way for kids to understand exactly what is happening to the
numbers in the problems. They will all
learn the strategy and will be able to use the strategy that works the best for
them eventually. 5th graders
are excited to learn about: volume,
division, multiplication, place value, estimating, powers of 10, expanded form,
parentheses, converting measurements, multiplying with 2 digit numbers and
multiples.
