The Watery Earth science unit is SO much fun!
Our bus doubles as a classroom!  Our naturalist Jennifer Wolf is teaching the entire day!

We started our day at the Portage/Baseline Lake Waste Water Treatment Plant.  Mr. Kangas explains how his treatment plant works, and quizzes kids about the various numbers involved in the process.  Mr. Kangas’ is the “schematic diagram” on page 35 of the Watery Earth journals.  After Portage/Baseline, we head to Loch Alpine where Mr. Rhulig explains the cool system HE uses for the 540 customers in Loch Alpine.  After eating lunch next to the Huron River at Delhi Metro-park, we head to Barton Dam where we learn about some Ann Arbor history and how the dam has been in operation since the early 1900s.  Barton Dam is one of four dams on the Huron River.  It was designed by engineer Gardner Stewart Williams and architect Emil Lorch and built in 1912-13 as part of the development of hydroelectric power.  The structure is 34 feet high and 1767 feet long.  The dam was purchased by the City of Ann Arbor in 1960 from Detroit Edison and later restarted hydroelectric generation in 1980.

Next up:  Lake Erie and the Detroit River Thursday, May 26th J
