Reading
Groups are in FULL SWING!
Who knew wearing your books would be so fun!?
We LOVE reading groups in room
306. Kids are reading a wide variety of
FICTION books right now.
Double Fudge – Oh Fudge. What a
character he is! This kid LOVES money
and giving his brother Peter a hard time.
Otherwise Known as Sheila the
Great – Sheila is having a hard time at
camp. Buy why? What’s happening at camp, and why does she
lie to her friend?
Fractured Fairy Tales – This is a hilarious book. The kids LOVE this book. They laugh out loud while reading it. What happens when you take a famous fairy
tale and FRACTURE it? It’s fun finding
out!
Time Warp Trio (See You Later,
Gladiator) – These books are SUPER fun. The Book transports the boys back to ancient
Rome – and face to face with a giant
gladiator. This book series is a
wonderful introduction to a wide variety of things that have happened in history,
and hopefully eager to learn more! I
love the discussions we get ourselves into during our group time.
Magic
Tree House – In this group, we read a book
about castles before break. In this new
MTH book, Jack and Annie are traveling to ancient times…and visiting a castle. We are seeing the same vocabulary that we
learned from the book Castles and the kids LOVE the connections they are
able to make between the two books.
Reading
groups are chocked full of learning. We
discuss what we’re reading, make connections to other things we’ve read, learn
new vocabulary words, chat with one another about our thoughts, and write about
what we’ve read. We also continue to
work on our fluency, and how we sound when we read out loud. Things we’ve discussed recently:
Ways to
sound out words we don’t know.
Highlighting
important parts of a book (using RAZ KIDS books).
We write
a LOT about the books we read.
Summaries, predictions, questions, and much more!
Using
sticky notes to keep track of our reading – thoughts, questions, vocabulary, etc.
LABELS! We have started using labels to write about
what we are reading. These are SO
cool. I print the labels and kids put
the label in their Dear Mrs. McGee notebooks.
It’s. Great. Writing about reading is difficult. There’s a lot to remember when writing about
a book you are reading. That’s why we
continue to practice…a lot!
