Watery Earth Poetry
And Surface Water

What do the folks in other states talk about when they study the Watery Earth!?  I feel sorry for all of them.  We have SO much to discuss!  We delve into the GREAT LAKES a lot during this unit.  How can you not!?
As a class, we talked about SURFACE WATER around the United States and wrote them down in our science journals.  We are learning a lot of new vocabulary including:  bays, reservoir, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, sea, body of water, fresh water, salt water, glacier, surface water, and climate.  Working in groups, we looked at Michigan maps to find surface water around the U.S.. We then used Michigan maps in small groups to find surface water in our state.

As we learn about surface water, river, creek, stream, gulf, inlet, marsh, swamp, bays, water cycles, and SO MUCH MORE, we are thinking about what we want to know more about.  They will be writing a report about an invasive species, or something troubling our water supply.  To start our thinking about these things, they wrote poetry with this very theme.  They had a ball.  They learned while they wrote, and the poems they came up with were SPECTACULAR.  I loved walking around the room listening to their thoughts and chatter with one another.  WooT!
