Morning Meeting Greeting Leading to a Short Writing Assignment!

I put a variety of Martin Luther King Jr. quotes on pieces of paper and handed them out during our morning meeting.  Kids talked to one another and discussed what they thought their quotes meant.  Once we finished our meeting, kids taped their quotes into their Writer’s Notebooks and wrote their thoughts about the quote.  Some kids chose to write about them during their free writing time the following day.  I loved wandering around the room to see what they were thinking.  Here are some of the quotes I used:
The time is always right to do what is right.

We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.

I have decided to stick with love.  Hate is too great a burden to bear.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love.

  We must use time creatively.
